Wed, 18 Nov 2009 13:57:00 -0800 Anybody need an ipod monster? http://ryankaz.posterous.com/anybody-need-an-ipod-monster http://ryankaz.posterous.com/anybody-need-an-ipod-monster

Al-ipod

This little guy just looks to good to go unused. I Tried my hand at 99Designs.com to see what it was all about. So there are good clients on there but the people in the company who post the projects are dumb as shit. They are cheap, that’s obvious, but they have no idea what they’re doing. They don’t take scale and readability into account at all. There are too many good directions that must not get feedback because you never see them explored further. In short the biggest problem with that website is the uneducated clients looking for a quick cheep piece of dung.

I digress… I really liked this monster. He was runner up in a pool of 300+ designs. If you want him or something like him drop me request.

Tue, 03 Nov 2009 11:29:00 -0800 Rant for the Day - Damn FREElancers http://ryankaz.posterous.com/rant-for-the-day-damn-freelancers http://ryankaz.posterous.com/rant-for-the-day-damn-freelancers

Being a freelancer myself I can say such a thing as “Damn” my kind. This goes for web designers as well as graphic artists and those of us doing both. What am I getting at here?

Good clients are getting had by underbidding kids with small skill sets and charlatans alike. Untrained and unseasoned youths are building websites, designing logos and much more using hacked software that they tech themselves. These twerps do the work for near nothing and produce something that many times gets used despite hiccups… Improperly made source files, missing fonts, broken code bits, etc.

The “charlatans” as I call them are those who just outsource to foreign countries and take the credit. The work level is usually much better than what the kids do. Again there are file flaws and to fix them usually costs more.

About half of my new clients over the last two years have come to me after having wasted money on bad materials. The Craig’s List job posts are where most of these clients meet their cheep cheapskates but now there are a good deal of sites like 99designs.com that low ball real designers and get everyone in trouble. At least the logo or whatever looks pretty good with these sites. There is still a lack of discipline here however. My clients are not getting a full set of file types and color spaces that they need. There have been no style guides made or pantones selected. It is up to the designer to have their client’s needs in mind when creating branded collateral.

I’ve said my bit. I’m happy now.

Be careful world!

Sun, 01 Nov 2009 13:49:00 -0800 Fancy Stamps http://ryankaz.posterous.com/fancy-stamps http://ryankaz.posterous.com/fancy-stamps

It’s so hard to find good stamping/seal looks out there. This design set works well with photoshop when they are textured, distressed, shaded and skewed.

As always, you can get these from me if you ever want the Illustrator file. kaz@ryankazdesign.com

Sun, 01 Nov 2009 13:25:00 -0800 Robots on the Brain http://ryankaz.posterous.com/robots-on-the-brain http://ryankaz.posterous.com/robots-on-the-brain

I can’t help but love simple design. Robots, along with aliens and spaceships, have been my favorite subjects since childhood. The “Black Hole” was one of my favorite movies, visually of course, for inspiration. I love retro packaging and dye cut metal toys from the 40s and 50s but I think that right now I’m on a 70s and 80s kick.

These duotone robots are available to anyone who wants them for any purpose (original AI file). Email me at kaz@ryankazdesign.com
